Arab and international competition for the presidency of UNESCO and the country candidate advanced


The Qatari candidate for the post of new Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was presented in the first round of elections which was launched in the French capital Paris. Seven candidates, including three from Arab countries, Egypt, Lebanon and Qatar, competed in the elections The Qatari candidate Hamad bin Abdul Aziz Al-Kawari won 19 votes, followed by French candidate Audrey Azoulay and Egyptian candidate Ambassador Moushira Khattab with 11 votes. Observers ruled out that the new president would be chosen in the first round, and if no candidate could obtain a majority of votes, the vote could continue throughout the week for four rounds. All expectations go to other rounds among the most vocal candidates. The 58-nation executive council held its meetings, and the secret ballot began, with the winner needing 30 votes.
